Women's History Month: Empower Yourself & Other Christian Women in Life & Ministry

March is Women's History Month!

Empower yourself and future generations. Here are 4 things to consider:

#1 - Consider National History

I homeschool my oldest granddaughter. We were recently studying history and came across the letter written by Abigail Adams to her husband John, who would later become the 2nd President of the United States. According to Founders Online, she said, "And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors." And yet, it was more than a century before women were even granted the right to vote.

Let us consider what history has taught us about the rights of women in our country and continually strive to be treated equally with men. For example, according to Payscale's Gender Pay Gap Report, women in the U.S. still earn only 83 cents for every dollar that men earn.

Women are also still lagging behind in church ministry leadership. Check out the stats in your organization and let's "remember the ladies!"

#2 - Consider Biblical History

There are so many women in the Bible to look at when it comes to leadership and ministry. This is inspiring! In the Old Testament, we see that:

  • Deborah was a judge over Israel (Judges chapter 4-5).

  • Miriam was a prophetess (Exodus & Numbers).

  • Huldah was a prophetess, who was sought by the king's men to interpret the Law (2 Kings 22:14).

  • Esther was a queen who stood up for the lives of her people (Esther).

In the New Testament, which is where we are living, we see other great examples:

  • Phoebe was a diakonos or deaconess/minister (Romans 16:1-2).

  • Priscilla instructed Apollos (Acts 18:26).

  • Junia was referred to (by the Apostle Paul) as "outstanding among the apostles" (Romans 16:7).

  • Philip's daughters prophesied (Acts 21:8-9).

  • Euodia and Syntyche "contended for the gospel" alongside Paul (Philippians 4:2-3).

"If we do not support women in ministry, how will the next generation of women arise to confidently stand for truth and proclaim the Gospel to lost souls?" – Pastor Erin

#3 - Consider Your Family History

Look at the women in your family. Are there any women who have led in ministry for the Lord? If so, what a blessing to have these examples! Here are mine:

  • My great-great grandmother started a work in our hometown. Watch for a free pdf about her in the newsletter later this month!

  • My mother was a music minister for most of her life.

  • I have been an ordained minister for 20 years.

  • And there have been other women involved in music, prayer, hospitality, support, and giving ministries.

Maybe you are the first in your family. That's awesome!

#4 - Consider Supporting Other Women in Ministry

If we do not support women in ministry, how will the next generation of women arise to confidently stand for truth and proclaim the Gospel to lost souls? We need to support other women in their ministry callings.

  • What can you do today to support a woman in ministry?
